The Poteau area has a lot to offer for kids and teens. Many of these places are open year-round and also offer birthday parties and special events. This list covers a number of different options for kids entertainment in the area.
This is Poteau’s premier kids destination point! In addition to bowling, Strike-a-Lot also has a large arcade gallery, food court and a huge laser tag arena. They offer birthday parties and special events. Many nights, they’ll have special events going on, such as glow-bowl and karaoke bowl.
Established in the 1980’s, Poteau’s rollar skating rink has been around for many, many years. This is a great place to take the kids so that they can burn off some energy. Although it’s been around for over 30 years, it’s seen many upgrades and improvements. Today, Skate-Reation also hosts Poteau’s own roller derby team, the Maidens of Mayham. Rollar Skates and Inline Skates are allowed. The skating rink also has a food court and snack bar.
The LeFlore County museum is the largest museum outside of Fort Smith in the area. Consisting of three floors of exhibits, children are sure to find something that they enjoy. The museum hosts special events throughout the year and has a rotating exhibit area that features something new every few months. Housed in an an old hotel built in 1922, many of the features remain as they once were. This museum provides a fascinating glimpse back in time and is suitable for all ages.
Poteau’s movie theater and drive-in theater are always a hit. The drive-in is one of the last remaining drive-in theaters in the state. Bring your lawn chairs and park in front of the large screen for a unique movie-going experience. A large snack bar and concession stand has a wide variety of food and drinks to enjoy during the movies. During certain times, the indoor movie theater can also be rented for parties and celebrations.
While most people don’t think of a resort as being a great place for kids, the owners have made great strides in creating an amazing outdoor recreational experience. There are a variety of activities to participate in at the resort, including canoeing and kayaking, paddle boarding, horse and pony rides, archery, hiking and biking, fishing, and boating, just to name a few. In 2017, they also added a large splash pad and playground area just for kids.
Poteau Spirit Center
While this is a functioning gymnastics center in Poteau, the facility can be rented out for parties. The building has a lot of foam gymnastic props and the air track where kids can run and jump and play, as well as a large inflatable bounce house. The facility also has a large seating area for parents. The gymnastics area is secure to where there’s only two entry/exit points, and is safe enough so that even young children can play.
Poteau Area Parks
Both Bill J. Barber Park and Twyman Park have large playgrounds for the kids. Dunbar Park has a smaller play area, but is more secluded. The playground at Bill J. Barber Park was reciently upgraded and features new equipment. There is also a basketball court located there. Twyman Park has a large play area, tennis courts, a duck pond, and many other features. Currently the public pool is closed while the city works to repair it.
For 2018, Wister Lake State Park has upgraded their splash pad and now offers mini-golf. There is also a large frisbee golf area on Querry Island.
Located in Downtown Poteau, Poteau Games primarily sells video, board, and specialty games. However, this is also a great local hangout for those interested in gaming. Many times throughout the year, they will host game competitions.
The PARC: Poteau Area Recreational Complex
If your children are into sports, this is the best place to go! At the PARC, you’ll find areas for playing baseball and soccer, as well as large fields for frisbees, kites, and so on.
